Mark Blyth–Are the Populists Threatening Democracy?
In the following must-watch 10-minute video, Mark Blyth, a professor of political science, shows why economically disenfranshised people all over the globe are fast losing faith in traditional political parties and are looking elsewhere for their voices to be heard. As Bill Clinton once famously said, it’s the economy, stupid. Oh, and the way globalization has been managed in the interests of increasingly few over the last 30 years — the so-called NAFTA effect.
At the end Blyth turns the original question on its head: is it the populists that are threatening democracy or the technocrats that are strangling it?
"We have no intention, however, of making a fetish of democracy. It may well be true that our generation talks and thinks too much of democracy and too little of the values which it serves."
