Bernard Connolly: the EU is an “explicitly anti-democratic”, crony capitalist state

As the EU is putting up yet another show of fiercely contested unity this might be a good time to post a video from 3 years ago with Bernard Connolly, author of the superb book 'The Rotten Heart of Europe'. Followed by one from 2018 and 1997.

Brexit: the great disappointment

"the "European project" has only ever had one real agenda underpinning everything it does.
This is a desire to integrate the countries of Europe so closely under a new system of government centralised in Brussels that it would be extremely difficult for any country to leave it."

Cross-posted from EUReferendum.com.

Booker has dedicated his last column of the year to Brexit matters, with the heading: "Europe's 'great deception' fooled our politicians for decades. Next up, the great disappointment...".

As we move on from enjoying our last pre-Brexit Christmas to thoughts of the year ahead, he writes, only one prediction can be made with absolute confidence: that the national mood next Christmas may not be quite so merry.

From there, he has managed to circumvent the usual Telegraph ban on mentioning my name by the device of referring to our book. Booker regards it as one of his most significant moments in the 27 years he has spent seriously reporting for The Telegraph on the EU and its impact on British life.

This, of course, is The Great Deception and, says Booker, it brought to light the true origins of the EU, as well as many long-hidden details of its history.

Writing this 600-plus page book was certainly an experience and far from being value-free. What we found in the process of writing convinced us of one unavoidable conclusion: that one day we would have to leave the EU.

The reason Booker has decided to mention it now is because some aspects of our research has particular relevance to where we find ourselves today. The first is that, to a much greater extent than is generally realised, the "European project" has only ever had one real agenda underpinning everything it does.

This is a desire to integrate the countries of Europe so closely under a new system of government centralised in Brussels that it would be extremely difficult for any country to leave it.

The reality of this is something a lot of people have difficulty coming to terms with, choosing to believe that what is now the EU is simply a benign trading bloc. Conservatives in particular have their own variation on this myth.

Many believe that the EEC started off as a nice cuddly trading agreement but somehow went off the rails and became "political" as continental politicians decided to exploit it in order to pursue a centuries-old ambition to unite Europe.

That this is a false picture is borne out by our research, which led to the title of our book. The original "great deception" stemmed from a deliberate decision by Jean Monnet and his "co-conspirators" including former Belgian prime minister Paul-Henri Spaak.

Their action came after the successful creation of the Coal and Steel Community when Monnet's ambition over-rode his natural caution and he pushed for a full-blown European Political Community (EPC) with its own constitution and its own European army.

1. Framing a Job Guarantee - an excellent rebuttal

The second strategy is more difficult, but will pay bigger dividends, by far, if it can be successfully implemented: Teach the American public how modern, sovereign fiat-money actually works. Because if they learn that, not only does the Job Guarantee program become a logical and viable opportunity, many other public goods and services—which previously no one could imagine how to collect enough tax-dollars to pay for—become viable opportunities as well. Ms. McArdle can call this “socialism”—and consign it, as she does, to the “ash heap of history.” I would call it the modern future of sovereign democracy, assuming sovereign democracy is to have any future at all.

6. Roy Cohn was The Original Donald Trump

"In the bipartisan New York political culture that nurtured Cohn and Trump, the statute of limitations for nearly every crime or outrage lasts about 48 hours."

"He got what he’d paid for. He had written his checks knowing that the Clintons could be counted on not to bite the small hand that fed them — at least not until their own self-interest was threatened in 2016."

"Had Cohn not been struck down by AIDS, Trump might have arrived in Washington far faster."

Nigel Farage Blasts EU, Juncker Over Catalonia: Spain Violates Article 2 of Lisbon Treaty

I agree with Mish:

Nigel Farage made his best speech ever in the European Parliament.

Farage called the Catalonia crackdown a foretaste of EU political suppression.

As I always say, the EU is a fascistoid organization.

Merkel: "Oh Theresa, I am Shameless." - With apologies to Billy Joel.

Well I'm shameless
© Getty

When it comes to fucking you,
I'll do anything you fear me for,
I'll do anything at all

And I'm standing
Here for all the world to see,
Oh UK, what's there in store for you,
I don't care for you to fall

You know now I'm not a bitch who's ever been
Insecure about my EU I've been living in
I don't decide easy, I have my blunders,
But in my dream I have you crucified

I'm shameless
Honey, I do have a prayer
Every time I see you kneeling there
I dream about BDSM

And I'm changing,
Swore I'd always compromise,
Oh, but you convinced me otherwise
I'll take you to the cleaners you

You see in all my life I've never found
What I couldn't resist, what I couldn't screw
I could walk away from anyone I ever knew,
But I want to walk all over you

I have never had anything have this much control on me
I've worked too hard to call my country my own
And I've made myself an EU, and it's worked so perfectly,
But it sure won't now, if I recuse,
I've never had so much to lose
And I'm shameless

You know it should be easy for a bitch who's strong
To say she's sorry or admit when she's wrong
I've never lost anything I ever missed,
But I've never been in a rage like this
It's out of my hands

I'm shameless
I'll drag you in the dungeon now,
I don't want it anyhow,
But I can't let go

Oh I'm shameless
Shameless as only Medusa can be
The UK won't make a total fool of me
I just wanted you to know
That I'm ruthless

I just wanted you to know
Oh I'm shameless

To get you down on your knees
Shameless

UK, I said
I feel shameless

EU gangsters owe the UK billions

Nigel Farage, the only bright light among all those seat farters in the EU Parliament Colosseum of Doom, sticks it to the reps of the so far 27 remaining countries. You can have a Brexit where we just walk away without a deal. No fucking problem, because other countries in the world will continue doing what they do anyway, and that is trade. The 60 billion euro bill is an empty threat.

Nigel Farage initially said EU behaving like the mafia. Mafiosi usually hide, not so in the EU. Its chief Mafiosa is operating in broad daylight. Out of Berlin.

Brexit, easy as Carling Black Label sunbeds

Canst thou hear the death knell of the EU over all those threats?

Asked by Bild am Sonntag newspaper if other member states would follow Britain's example in quitting, Juncker said: "No. Britain's example will make everyone realise that it's not worth leaving."

He added: "On the contrary, the remaining member states will fall in love with each other again and renew their vows with the European Union." Was it April 1?

Just today the EU Alcoholic-in-Chief Juncker said: “Brexit isn’t the end. A lot of people would like it that way, even people on another continent where the newly elected US President was happy that the Brexit was taking place and has asked other countries to do the same.

“If he goes on like that I am going to promote the independence of Ohio and Austin, Texas in the US.” Yaddayaddayadda

Edgar Miller nails it: Don't worry about Brexit negotiations, no deal is better than what we have now with the EU.

Brexit, media coverage, neoliberals and all that jazz

The incessant Brexit bashing in German news websites, the glee and the false hopes that tiny Frankfurt will suck in huge chunks of banking/investment business from London, that the UK will and should suffer for their audacity to leave this holy temple of ultimate doom is a glaring indication what the EU is all about: alienating peoples, suppressing democratic referendums wherever possible, top-down decision making and, oh wow, abolishing roaming fees. Not to forget the on again-off again-on again road tax for German autobahns with the result of Austria showing their deep love affair with the Piefkes.

Neil Wilson posted an excellent comment on Bill Mitchell's post

The Left lacks courage and is riddled with inferiority complexes

in which he among other deals with the media coverage of the UK's Guardian newspaper.
The UK Guardian seems to be conducting a daily war against the Brexit outcome with its onslaught of articles each day about the doom that Britain faces if they do not reverse the decision.
In today’s edition, there are several anti-Brexit articles and in recent days we have seen predictions of that “Hard Brexit threatens global financial system”, “global economic growth at risk”, “brace for further Brexit price rises”, “UK at risk fo Brexit ‘catastrophe'” and so it goes.
The latest article (January 10, 2016) – The Brexit resistance: ‘It’s getting bigger all the time’ – is a pathetic, bleating story about Europeans who are worried they will be kicked out of Britain.
Neil Wilson's comment:
The activist Left is trapped in a false ideology that is rapidly becoming a religion.
It appears that the problem stems from the philosophy, which swallowed the neoliberal myth hook, line and sinker. So not only is the economics nonsense, but all the philosophical principles built on top of that are nonsense too.
The left cling to an Open Borders, One World, One Government, One currency viewpoint – extreme centralisation – run by elite, indoctrinated hierophants in perpetuity. Democracy is tolerated to quell the masses but really they don’t want any genuine democratic state at all. Tax is a statement of how morally pure you are – a religious devotion that shows sacrifice. Hence the obsession with taxing anything that isn’t nailed down. It is a purifying device to drive out sin – like fire was to the medieval priest. The poor are patronised in an act of virtue signalling rather than genuinely helped out.
But worst of all you are judged and categorised solely on prejudicial attributes rather than your own actions.
Until this insular entitled clique is ejected from the temple, progress is going to be difficult.
